Literary Dialect in Dickens Project

Non-standard spelling, characterisation and discourse across eleven Dickens works

Pickwick Papers、Oliver Twist、Nicholas Nickleby、Martin Chuzzlewit、David Copperfield、Bleak House、Our Mutual Friend、Barnaby Rudge、Hard Times、Little Dorrit、Sketches by Boz — an exploratory comparison of character-linked spellings and stylised speech across eleven Dickens works.

An exploratory eleven-work inventory of non-standard spellings and character-linked forms. The network represents candidate orthographic associations, not an exhaustive dictionary of literary dialect or a validated transcript of every character’s speech. Counts are based on entire texts, not speaker-specific dialogue frequencies.

Corpus inventory · eleven works

Research caution: The inventory includes phonetic respellings, colloquial contractions, regional vocabulary and characteristic expressions. “Sample checked” indicates that selected contexts have been inspected; it does not mean that every occurrence has been assigned to a speaker or that the inventory is exhaustive.

Sources: eleven Project Gutenberg ebooks (#580, #730, #967, #968, #766, #1023, #883, #917, #786, #963 and #882). Whole-text candidate counts were checked against their GITenberg mirrors. The legacy Nicholas Nickleby inventory is retained.
